Obituary: Mr. J.P. Kennedy Jr.
Mr. J.P. Kennedy Jr. of Hartford passed away Friday, May 13, 2016 at Flowers Hospital. He was 92.
Mr. Kennedy was born May 29, 1923 in Geneva County to the late Jack Paulin and Gladys Wall Kennedy. Paul grew up in Hartford, Alabama. He was a student at Auburn University when he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in WWII. He was a cotton ginner, farmer, cattleman and owner of Ten Mile Creek Fish Farm. He was a founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of City Bank of Hartford, now part of Friend Bank. He was instrumental in the development of Hartford Retirement Village and the Hartford Nursing Home, and was a member of Hartford Baptist Church. Some of his favorite childhood memories were made with his family in Grayton Beach, Florida, and this passion lives on in his great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Harris Kennedy; his son, William Harris Kennedy and a sister, Anne Kennedy.
Survivors include his daughter, Laura Bancroft (Steve), Dothan; son, Jack P. Kennedy III, Hartford; six grandchildren: April Kennedy Knowles (Richard), William Harris Kennedy Jr. (Jill), William Bradford Bancroft (Mallory), Benjamin Paul Bancroft (Jil), David Patrick Bancroft (Christin) and Wesley Guy Kennedy; eight great-grandchildren: Hunter Kennedy Knowles, Abigail Kennedy Bancroft, William Mason Bancroft, Walker Bradford Bancroft, Kennedy Catherine Bancroft, Harper Madelyn Bancroft, Hayes Paul Kennedy and Hadley Jean Kennedy; one great-granddaughter on the way, Ellen Ann Bancroft; daughter in law, Beth Guy Kennedy; special family friend, Melma Neal; other extended family and friends.
Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2016, in the Hartford City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Slocomb directing.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Metavivor, 1783 Forest Drive #184, Annapolis, MD 21401, to honor Mr. Kennedy. 100% of donations go to metastatic breast cancer research.
