Mr. Junior “Sarge” H. Shoupe of Wicksburg passed away Friday, December 7, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 84.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 10, in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ellis Vickery and Rev. Tim Simmons officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Wicksburg Assembly of God Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to Alacare Hospice.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m.
Mr. Shoupe was born on February 25, 1928 in Jackson County, Florida to the late John C. and Frances Mayo Shoupe. He was the original Roto-Rooter franchise owner for southeast Alabama and parts of northwest Florida. In the early 1960s Mr. Shoupe was one of the top rated snooker players in the world. He played music on the same stage and in the same venues as Johnny Cash, George Jones, Roy Acuff as well as several others.
During his military career Mr. Shoupe was both a Combat Infantryman and an Army Aviator. He also appeared in two U.S. Army movies and participated in Army entertainment productions. As a result of serving in World War II, a tour in Korea and two combat tours in Vietnam, he liked to say he was a three-star veteran. For his heroism in Vietnam, he was awarded a Bronze Star.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Hayward K.; four brothers; and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years: Dorothy “Dot” Shoupe of Wicksburg; one daughter: Lorri Deal (Johnny) of Wicksburg; two sons: Lynn Shoupe (Shirley), Larry Shoupe (Starla) all of Wicksburg; eight grandchildren: Brandon Shoupe (Brooke), Jonathan Shoupe, Clayton Shoupe (Rachael), Jennifer Sullivan (Johnathan), Patton Shoupe (Kaylen), Danielle Worley Ellenburg all of Wicksburg, Derek Worley (Juli), Dustin Worley (Wendy) all of Bonifay; nine great grandchildren; one sister: Margaret Hoats (Chris) of Walterboro, SC; two brothers: Frank Shoupe (Pat) of Mulberry, FL, Sanders Shoupe (Joyce) of Deatsville; several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Sanders and Joyce Shoupe, Frank and Pat Shoupe, Johnny Deal, Kat with Alacare Hospice, Wicksburg Rescue and Dr. James Sullivan and his staff for the kindness shown and for the care given to Mr. Shoupe during his illness.
