Calvin Lomax “Mackey” Smith, a resident of Cottonwood, died Sunday, March 4, 2012 at his residence. He was 68.
Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held 10 AM Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at Cottonwood United Methodist Church with Reverend Bruce Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Cottonwood City Cemetery with Southern Heritage directing. The family will receive friends beginning at 9 AM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road Dothan, Alabama 36303 or the Town of Cottonwood, Bruner Park Fund, PO B ox 447, Cottonwood, AL 36320.
Mr. Smith was born September 1, 1943 to Calvin Lee and Fannie Smith. He was a graduate of Ashford High School and Troy University. Mr. Smith worked for five years as a rural postal carrier and then began a 25 year career as Postmaster of which he retired in 1999. He was a two term Mayor of Cottonwood and a member of Cottonwood United Methodist Church. Mr. Smith will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Lewis Smith, Cottonwood; two daughters, Staci Smith Bark and her husband, Blake, Mobile, Jennifer Waggoner and her husband, Chris, Cottonwood; son, Scott Lomax Smith, Cottonwood; six grandchildren, Ben Bentley, Ryleigh Bark, Danny Waggoner, Megan Sawyers, Lenora Waggoner and Jason Bark.
Serving as active pallbearers will be: Danny Waggoner, Chris Waggoner, Blake Bark, Jimmy Lewis, Johnny Lewis and Scott Lomax Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be the Cottonwood town Council, Jason Bark and Ben Bentley.
