Lowell Ferguson, a faithful man of God, and resident of Dothan, went to be with the Lord on April 2, 2016. He was 95 years old.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Ridgecrest Baptist Church with Reverends Ray Jones and Homer Davis officiating. A graveside service will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends starting at 12:30 prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ridgecrest Baptist Church Building Fund or the Ridgecrest Baptist Church Mission team.
Mr. Ferguson was born in Carroll County, Mississippi on July 4, 1920. He was the oldest son of the late Turner S. Ferguson and Oma Michie Ferguson.
Lowell was a graduate of JZ George High School in Carrollton, Mississippi, and Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, D.C. Mr. Ferguson was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the 8th Air Force under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Lowell married Gwin Brookins of Malone, Florida on July 2, 1949 at National Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. Gwin, the love of his life, passed away on March 19, 2009. Earlier, Lowell and Gwin resided in the Nation’s Capital until 1951 before moving to Lynchburg, Virginia, where they lived for 4 years, then moved to Dothan in 1955. They were active members of Ridgecrest Baptist Church, where Lowell served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and served on several committees. Mr. Ferguson was the founder of Ferguson’s Dixie Advertising in 1962 and retired in 2005. He was a member, and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Houston County and an honorary member of the Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Ferguson is survived by a son, Gary Ferguson, grandchildren, Cam Ferguson, Mark Ferguson, Jamie Dubose, and Griffin Ferguson; 2 daughters in law Cindy Ferguson, and Lisa Ferguson Fridolfson; great grandchildren, Clarke, Lucie, Ella Ferguson, Cara Mia, and Ava Nicole Dubose; brother Jim (Frances) Ferguson; sister Sunshine Branner; sisters in law Betty Brookins, and Jo Ferguson; many cousins, nieces, and nephews also survive.
Mr. Ferguson was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Gwin; a son Kevin Ferguson; a brother Waynor (Bub) Ferguson; a sister Oma Rose Fox; and a brother in law Joe Brookins.
The Ferguson family would like to give a special thank you to Sonja Kirkland, Barbara Ragland, Chester Davis, the staff of Extendicare, and the many friends, neighbors, and church members who have shown their kindness and support for Mr. Ferguson over the years.
