M. Maxwell Nelson of Dothan passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, January 26, 2024. He was 102 years old.



Funeral Services will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, February 3, 2024, at First Baptist Church of Dothan with Pastor Neil Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.



The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church of Dothan from 1 to 2 P.M. Saturday, one hour prior to the service.



In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Dothan or Wiregrass Hope.



Being the youngest of 10 children Maxwell Nelson (Max) was born outside Opp, Alabama, Babbie Community, Covington County on a working produce farm. Upon graduation from Opp High School he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corp, then entered the Merchant marines during WW II transporting fuel for the invasion of France. He visited 4 continents while enjoying the life of a sailor. He married Inez Meek and moved to Dothan in 1947 working 27 years at Dothan Hosiery Mill. After it closed he worked as Building Superintendent for First Baptist Church of Dothan where he was a 77 year member and Deacon. He was a Master Mason and member of United Commercial Travelers serving as State President. As a member of the Merchant Marine Veterans of WW II he received the Congressional Gold Medal in a ceremony at the AMM Museum in New Orleans in Oct. 2022. In retirement he enjoyed traveling and dancing with the Doug Tew Singles Club and was a long time volunteer with Gentiva Hospice, who ministered to him well during his heavenly homegoing.



He was preceded in death by his parents, Mandy Melissa Lloyd and James Clanton Nelson, and his wife of 47 years Inez Meek and his wife of 18 years Beth Phillips.



He is survived by sons Glenn (Loujean Loftin) Nelson, Edmon (Nina Stephens) Nelson, and daughter Charlotte (Danny) Branton, 7 grandchildren: Jannalee Duke, Paul Nelson, Neil Nelson, James Nelson, Jason Nelson, Mary Katherine Branton-Housley, Christina Head, 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren and a host of friends. He was also preceded in death by 9 brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews.
