Mr. Ned Roger Johnson, of Dothan, died Wednesday, August 19, 2015. He was 86.
Born May 31, 1929 in Houston County, Alabama to the late Van and Cynthia Johnson, he spent most of his life in the Wiregrass area. He was a veteran, serving in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In 1953, he married Geraldine Smith of Madrid. Roger was employed by Hedstrom Company for 32 years, serving as the manager of the Chrome Plating Department. In 1986, he and Geraldine moved to Chicago, IL where he worked for Empire Hard Chrome. He retired in 1997 and they moved back to Dothan. Roger loved his family and went to great lengths to bestow a nickname on his children and grandchildren.
Roger was the last surviving member of Van Johnson’s children. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Hazel Shirley, Huitt Johnson, Edward Johnson, Evelyn Forehand, Louise Skipper, Joe Johnson, and Van Junior Johnson.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Geraldine Smith Johnson; his daughter, Patricia “Tootle” Pate (Ron); his three sons, Jerry “Buckie” Johnson (Carol), Mike “Little Mikey” Johnson (Patty), Richard “Boonie Kevin” Johnson, a long-time family friend, Andy Hammer; ten grandchildren, Christopher “Pooter Spooter” Pate, Caitlin “Little One” Atkins (Jonathan), Jennifer “Lil’ Punky” Welch (Dewayne), Jeremy “Tee Nince” Johnson, Bethany “Besame Mucho” McGhee (Shaun), Blake “Blakey Pooh” Johnson (Brooke), Justin Godwin (Michelle), Danielle Godwin, Brian Jones (Leslie), and Tyler Jones; eleven great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 AM Saturday, August 22, 2015 from the Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Ron Pate and Reverend Shane Traylor officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 10 AM until 11 AM Saturday, August 22, 2015 one hour prior to the service.
Active pallbearers will be Christopher Pate, Jeremy Johnson, Blake Johnson, Justin Godwin, Brian Jones, Jonathan Atkins, and Shaun McGhee.
