Noel E. Walters, 87, passed away peacefully February 22, 2013 at his home in Cowarts, AL.


A   graveside service will be held at Memory Hill Cemetery, Hwy. 52 W., Dothan, Alabama on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at 2:00 pm.


Noel was born April 1, 1925 in Gulfport, Mississippi. The family moved to Brooklyn, MS. and then to Pasadena, TX, before settling permanently in Brooklyn, MS. He was a Navy veteran, serving as a Motorman 3rd on a crash boat in the Russell Islands in the South Pacific from 1942 to 1945. Upon his discharge, he returned home to Brooklyn, and later used his G.I. Bill to attend radio school in New Orleans, La. His first job was at WWL in New Orleans.  He then went to radio stations from Baton Rouge to Dothan, at WTVY, and finally settled at WLBE in Leesburg Florida for several years. He met and married Thelma (Swank) Hart in 1963.  They came back to Dothan in 1965, and he worked for WTVY as broadcast engineer until he retired in the early ‘80’s.  He returned to school and received his GED diploma from Wallace College in 1985.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma, in 1965, and both of his parents Dudley J. and Bertha (Moore) Walters.


He is survived by his three sisters, Dorothy (Riley), Slidell, LA., Miriam (Martin), Dallas, TX, and Lois (Bierman) AR., his daughter, Donna Walters Penney, Cowarts, AL; his son and daughter-in-law David J. Walters, Sr. and Anna (Helmers) Walters, Leeville, LA., grandchildren David J. Walters, Jr., Tracy Walters, and Scott Walters of LA; and Carol R. Walters (Donna’s daughter) , Greeneville, TN, and 11 great grandchildren, of whom he was very proud.


The family would like to thank his doctors, especially Dr. Aliabadi, and Dr. Turnham for their service to him over the years.  Thank you to the nurses and staff of Gentiva Hospice for their wonderful care in his last year, especially Geraldine, who became his friend.
