Phillip Lawrence Forrester of Dothan and a fourth generation resident of Houston County died March 8, 2012. He was 77.


Funeral services will be held Monday, March 12, 2012 at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church of Dothan with Dr. Johnny Fain officiating and Southern Heritage Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be prior to the service at 9:30 a.m. The family requests a private burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Houston-Love Memorial Library, Taylor-Malone Library at Houston Academy or the First Baptist Church Library.


Mr. Forrester was born July 18, 1934 the son of the late William Jesse Forrester and Katharine Pruett Forrester.  He lived in Houston County his entire life. He attended Dothan High School and Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Georgia graduating in 1952. He attended Auburn University where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1957.  He served in the United States Army Transportation Corps at Fort Eustis and Fort Story in Virginia and was discharged from the Army Reserve with rank of captain. After his active duty service, he returned to Dothan and joined his father in the family business, Sanitary Dairy. He became sales manager in 1960. Upon the sale of Sanitary Dairy to Dairy Fresh in 1967, he served as general manager for one year. In 1968 he became president of Dreambuilt Homes for five years and president of Forrester Day Care (KinderCare Learning Centers) from 1970 until 1991. Other business interests include Capital Funds Director for Houston Academy and Executive Director of Community Foundation of Southeast Alabama. Additional involvement was with Forrester Farm, Hidden Lake Subdivision, and Southern Heritage Funeral Home. He has served on the Houston County Commission since 1997.


Mr. Forrester was active in community affairs. He was president of the Dothan Jaycees, a member of the Dothan Rotary Club for over 50 years where he served on the Board of Directors and was a recipient of the Paul Harris Award. He served on the Houston Academy Board of Trustees for 30 years and was chairman from 1979-1980. He was past president of Dothan Landmarks Foundation and the Wiregrass Auburn Club. Mr. Forrester was on the Board of Directors of Dothan Chamber of Commerce, SouthTrust Bank, University of South Alabama, Houston-Love Memorial Library, Dothan Area Botanical Gardens, Wiregrass Museum of Art, and Dothan Downtown Group. He was co-chairman of the Men’s Bible Class at First Baptist Church.


His leisure time was spent at Panama City Beach where he enjoyed boating. He also took pleasure in Auburn sports, golfing, and reading.


He is survived by his devoted wife, Miriam Black Forrester; daughter, Suellen Warren (Frank III); son, Jess Forrester (Tracy); sister, Faith Baker Menscer (Darrell); grandsons, Samuel, Jed, and Cal Warren, Will and Kevin Forrester; several nieces and nephews.


Serving as pallbearers will be Bill Blount, Leslie Blumberg, Earl Dove, Dr. LaBruce Hanahan, Harry Howell, Wallace Malone, Don Speigner, and John Watson.
