Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Thursday, July 18, 2024, in the Bethel Assembly of God Church with Pastor Jeff Downing and Pastor Randy Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Ariton Cemetery. Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 P.M. Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of West Alabama or to the Lewis & Faye Manderson Cancer Center.

Randy is survived by his loving wife of forty-eight years, Maxine, his son Brett Laney (Carrie Juliano) of Tuscaloosa and daughter Kelsè Laney of Birmingham. Brother Steve Laney (Jaine Crawley), sister Rhonda Peters, and his Mother-in-Law Jessie Lewis of Elba. Grandchildren Amèlie Saban (10), Luke Laney (6), Lena Laney (4); several nieces and nephews.

Randy is preceded in death by his parents, Obie Ray & Annette Portwood Laney, grandparents Foy and Annie Lou Portwood as well as Homer and Donie Laney, father-in-Law Kayo Lewis, sister Brenda Laney Harris, and brother-in-Law Aubrey Peters.

Randy was born at Edge Memorial Hospital in Troy, Alabama on May 16, 1957. He graduated from Ariton High School in 1975 where he was a standout football and baseball player for the Purple Cats. Upon graduation, Randy immediately began an outstanding business career by working for Blount Industries in Montgomery. He then worked for Hughes Missile in Eufaula, helping the United States Military develop weapons used extensively in the Gulf War of 1990. In 1996 Randy finally found a role that he was born for: outside sales. He worked for the next twenty-eight years in the energy sector traveling around the state of Alabama and the panhandle of Florida, supporting many different providers of oil and gasoline where he was often recognized as his company’s top performing salesman.

Randy was very involved as a parent, having coached Brett and Kelse’s little league teams. Randy’s children credit their father with instilling in them the need for a positive attitude, courageousness in the face of adversity, to always practice the golden rule and having a strong work ethic.

Randy had quick wit and an infectious humor that brought joy to all who knew him. He had a special gift for storytelling, captivating, loved ones with his tales and leaving them in stitches with his jokes. His laughter was contagious, and his ability to lighten the mood and make people smile was truly a gift from God.

Randy was very involved in the community having served on the Ariton City Council from 1989 until 1992 and as Mayor of Ariton from 1992 until 1996. “Rando” as he was known to friends and family, was a lifelong supporter of Ariton athletics and the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Some of his best memories were attending ‘Bama’s National Title wins against Miami in 1993, LSU in 2012 and Georgia in 2018.

Randy’s strong faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ guided how he treated everyone that he encountered. He made an immeasurable impact on the lives of many people and will be greatly missed.
