Raymon Benton, formally of Dothan, AL, passed away on Oct. 17, 2022. He was 89 years old.
He was born in Houston County, AL on January 18, 1933, to Fred and Ora Bell Benton. He was the third born of nine brothers. Raymon graduated from Geneva County High School, where he played baseball. He enlisted in the army in 1953, served his country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He married the love of his life, Betty Enfinger, on June 18, 1955. They made their home in Dothan, AL. Raymon worked at the Dothan Hosiery Mill, many years at Hand Supply Company and many years at Moore Equipment from which he retired. Their two children were born and raised in Dothan.
He played baseball in a regional league and in later years brought his love of the game to form a fund raiser for the American Heart Association. Raymon helped form the Benton/Hardy Softball Tournament that became an annual event in Dothan which brought together families to play as a team to benefit the charity. This tournament ran for over 20 years and at one time was the American Heart Association largest contributor in the state of Alabama. He was honored by the Association several times during his years as President for the tournament.
Raymon and Betty raised their children in a Christian home and attended Selma Baptist Church. He served as a Deacon in the church and taught Sunday School. He was recognized as a Deacon Emeritus for his years of dedicated service in the deacon ministry. He continued to be active in the church until his health made it to difficult to get to church.
He loved his family. Raymon loved nothing more than the Benton Family Reunion where he could be with all his loved ones and celebrate the family. He especially loved playing/harassing all the nieces and nephews. Anyone who knew Raymon knew he was a big kid at heart and that he never met a person he would not help. He was known for his loving heart and giving soul.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Betty; his granddaughter, Taylor; five brothers and five sisters-in-law.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah (Herbie) Deal, his son, Keith (Kimberly) Benton, and grandchildren, Lindsey (Justin) Shore, and Gracie (Katlyn) Benton-Hart, and two great-grandchildren, Mila and Niko Shore.
