Richard E. Armstrong was born in Dickinson, N.D. and grew up in Kankakee, Ill. During the Korean War, he served in the United States Army and was stationed in Fort Benning, Ga. While in Georgia, he met the love of his life, Shirley Denney. They were married in December 1956. After being wed, he graduated from Mercer University with a degree in economics and went onto work and eventually retired from Ford Motor Company. His job took him across the south. He finally settled in Dothan, Ala. where he and his family lived for 38 years. Dick’s love for cars went far beyond his work. He thoroughly enjoyed watching NASCAR and could be seen around town sporting his orange, 1965 Mustang. He also had a love for music. Dick was a very skilled trumpet player and frequently sang solos in church. He also led the music departments in several small churches.
