Earl was a man of integrity and warmth, whose generosity knew no bounds. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Wilma Butterworth; his sister, Jean Sanders; and his son-in-law, Danny Lewis. His legacy of love continues through his devoted wife of 50 years, Barbara Butterworth, and their children, Lisa Lewis, Greg (Shannon) Butterworth, Sharon (Robert) Washington, Cindy Daniels, and Natalie (James) Nelson. He was a proud brother to his sisters, Jane Good, Ellen Sanders, Evelyn (Wayne) Leatherwood, and Dianne (Rod) Spelts. Earl’s joy was multiplied by his eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, with a special bond shared with his grandson Cullen Daniels, who was affectionately known as "his buddy" and who cared for him tirelessly in his final days.
A 1955 graduate of Central High School in Phenix City, Earl’s work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident early on. He dedicated 46 years to Industrial Bearings and Transmission, where he made significant contributions, including managing the local store in Dothan since 1965. His professional life was paralleled by his commitment to community service, as he was actively involved in the Dothan, Houston County Jaycees. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Boys Club, the Civic Center, and the Opera House.
Earl’s service extended to the Dothan Civitan Club, where he was not only a member but also in honor of his service, had an Endowed Scholarship in his name at Troy University. His community spirit shone brightly as he helped run the Civitan booth at the National Peanut Festival, and his dedication to service was further exemplified by his membership in the Elks Club.
His personal life was rich with interests and hobbies. Earl was introduced to his beloved wife, Barbara, by a special friend in 1973, and they married in 1974, embarking on a journey of love and partnership that would last five decades. An avid fisherman, he found solace and joy in the tranquility of nature. He was a faithful member of Grandview Baptist Church for 32 years, where he nurtured his spiritual life and community bonds.
Earl served in the National Guard for six years, demonstrating his patriotism and commitment to his country. His love for automobiles was more than just a hobby; he enjoyed piddling with cars, had a passion for speed and precision, which was evident in his involvement with the Dothan Dragstrip and even coached baseball for Dothan Leisure Service.
Those who knew Earl will remember him as a man who was as handy as he was loving. He could fix almost anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His generosity extended beyond his immediate family, touching the lives of friends and strangers alike.
Special thanks are extended to SouthernCare Hospice and caregiver, Charmin Collins, for their compassionate care and support during Earl’s final days.
Richard Earl Butterworth lived a life marked by love, service, and commitment. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by the many lives he touched. He was a beacon of generosity, a pillar of his community, and above all, a loving family man. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
