Stephen Alexander Edmondson, Jr., age 90, of Dothan, passed away peacefully in his home by the side of his beloved wife on Monday, July 12, 2021. Stephen was born February 2, 1931 in Houston County, Alabama to the late Stephen Alexander Edmondson, Sr. and Ethel Milner Edmondson. He enjoyed a happy and adventurous childhood in Columbia, Alabama, then bravely served his country in the United States Army, engaging in active battle during the Korean War. After returning home, he enjoyed a long, successful career as a salesman, excelling at connecting with customers and closing deals.
Stephen was an avid gardener and voracious reader, a crossword puzzle wiz and a dedicated sports fan. He loved watching baseball, golf, and Alabama football. But his greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was a master storyteller, forever entertaining his children and grandchildren with stories that always managed to impart life lessons as well as laughter.
He was a longtime member of Shiloh Freewill Baptist Church in Columbia, Alabama. In recent years, he attended First Church of the Nazarene in Dothan, Alabama. Stephen was a proud member of the Columbia Masonic Lodge #135 for more than fifty years.
In addition to his parents, Stephen was preceded in death by his best friend and brother, Billy Edmondson. He was also preceded by his brother-in-law Wallace Todd and sister-in-law Mary Lou York Edmondson.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Mary Smith Edmondson; his daughters, Linda Ward (Pat Johnson) and Nylene Robertson (Jim); his grandchildren, Shana Deyo (Jason Eaton), Caitlyn Ward (Phillip Pinyan), and Eden Hillman (Curtis); his great-grandchildren, Jace Deyo and Jarret Eaton; his dear sister, Mary Todd; and numerous other relatives and friends. Stephen was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. His passing leaves a hole in his family’s hearts and a void in their lives.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 17, 2021 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with burial following in Memory Hill Cemetery. Due to increasing Covid concerns, there will be a small private service for immediate family. Masks will be required.
The family will be receiving flowers, or contributions may be made to the Shiloh Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 9376 E County Road 22 Columbia, AL 36319.
