Terry Baxley, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2024, at the age of 83, surrounded by the warmth and love of his family in Dothan, Alabama. Born on February 7, 1941, in Midland City, Alabama, to Wirt and Elna Baxley, Terry grew up to be a pillar of strength and kindness in his community.

Terry’s journey began as a spirited young man, where he graduated from Wicksburg High School in 1959. He left an indelible mark on his alma mater as the captain of the football team, Class President, and recipient of the Best All Around award his senior year. These early achievements reflected the leadership qualities and charisma that would define his life. His leadership qualities and dedication to excellence followed him into his professional life, where he retired as an Aircraft Maintenance Fleet Manager, a role that showcased his meticulous nature and unwavering work ethic.

Terry is preceded in death by his parents, Wirt and Elna Baxley; and brothers, Jerome Baxley and Tim Aughtman.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 63 years, Mary Loftin Baxley; daughter, Laurie Baxley Hughes (Bobby); son, Steve Baxley (Haley); adoring grandchildren, Haley Hughes Lanier (Corey), Josh Hughes (Kaylee), Mary Beth Baxley Webb (Lendon), Jake Baxley, Johnny Buie, Dawson Buie, and Luke Mills; great-grandchildren, Bryson Howell, Ellie Lanier, Faèlyn Webb, Colton Hughes, Marleigh Lanier, and Anslie Hughes; sister, Paulette Paul (Glenn); special family friends, Charles and Rosana Burnett; and an adopted granddaughter, Madeleine Burnett; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Terry was a man of many passions. An avid fisherman, he relished the quietude of nature and the thrill of the catch. His love for Alabama Football was infectious, and his rallying cry of "Roll Tide" could be heard on game days, echoing through the halls of his home. A gifted gardener, Terry’s collard greens and turnips were the pride of his vegetable patch. His culinary skills were equally renowned, especially when it came to cooking up feasts for his loved ones.

Affectionately known as "Poppie" to his grandchildren, Terry’s presence was a source of joy and comfort. His home was often the heart of gatherings, where karaoke sessions brought laughter and joy. His love for country and gospel music filled the air, creating a soundtrack for the many class reunions and parties he hosted.

Funeral Services will be held at 3 P.M. Friday, August 2, 2024, at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Michael Douglas officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be Josh Hughes, Jake Baxley, Corey Lanier, Lendon Webb, Johnny Buie, and Dawson Buie.

Honorary Pallbearers will be the Wicksburg Class of 1959.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Terry’s caregivers, Anita McCall, Jake Baxley, and Daysprings Hospice, especially Lynn and Samantha, for their compassionate care during his final days.
