Mr. Walter Harrison Pike, of County Rd. 33, Dothan, AL, formerly of Birmingham, AL passed away at sunrise Saturday, April 28, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 87.


 


Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm, Monday, April 30, 2012, at Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverends Mark Bristow and Jeff Peacock officiating. Burial will follow in Hodgesville Baptist Church Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.


 


The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 1 to 3 P.M. Monday, April 30, 2012, two hours prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made in his honor to Gentiva Hospice, American Cancer Society, or the building fund of Hodgesville Baptist Church, 11190 So. Co. Rd. 33, Dothan, AL 36301.


 


Mr. Pike was born October 27, 1924, in Jefferson County to the late James Henry and Ida Lee Pike of Birmingham. After serving 21 years in the United States Navy, he retired at the rank of Chief Petty Officer, then continued working and retired from working in civil service after 17 years. After his retirement, Mr. Pike enjoyed gardening and working in his woodshop. He served the Lord all of his adult life including serving as an active deacon for 34 years and teaching several Sunday School classes even after the loss of his sight in 1995.


 


Mr. Pike is survived by his loving wife, Jimmie Frances Rogers Pike of 69 years, a daughter, JoAnn Pike Hutton of Dothan; a son, Walter H. Pike (Janice) of Pansey; 2 grandchildren, Kelli (Josh) Harper and Jason (Lauren) Pike, 3 great-grandsons, and 1 great-granddaughter. He is also survived by 1 sister, Ida Lee Glasgow, 2 sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.


 


He is preceded in death by 1 brother and 2 sisters.


 


The family would like to express their appreciation to the doctor and staff of Dr. Cook, Southeast Cancer Center, Gentiva Hospice, and a deep appreciation for his hospice caregiver, Lori Furr.
