Mr. Walter James Bertrand of Dothan passed away Thursday, October 11, 2012, at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He was 72.


 


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. Friday, October 19, 2012, at St. Columba Catholic Church. Full Military Honors Service to follow at Memory Hill Cemetery.


 


A Wake Service will be held at 6 P.M. Thursday, October 18, 2012, at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 8 P.M. Flowers will be accepted or donations made be made to the Paralyze Veterans Association.


 


Walter James Bertrand known as “Bert” to many of his friends, was born in Gueydan Louisiana. He joined the USMC in 1957 and retired from the US Army in 1979 with full military honors. His time served include two tours in Vietnam. He received the following: National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (5 Awards), Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Senior Aircraft Badge, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. After retiring from the US Army, Mr. Bertrand attended the Aviation and Technical College in Ozark, Alabama where he received his A & P license. He went to work with Aviation Maintenance at Fort Rucker and worked with Huey and Blackhawk helicopters. Mr. Bertrand retired from DynCorp in 2002 with 23 years of service. He had over 40 years of aviation experience. He was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church in Dothan.


 


He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence J. Bertrand and Marie Chatagnier Bertrand; two brothers, Clarence J. Bertrand Jr. and John A. Bertrand; one sister, Theresa Bertrand Fuqua.


 


Survivors include his loving wife, Peggy Ann Bertrand of Dothan; daughter, Denise Kiser and her husband, Greg of Severn, Maryland; son, Cal Bertrand of Birmingham; sister, Leona Hebert and her husband, Joseph of Gueydan, Louisiana; brothers, Lawrence Bertrand of Gueydan, Louisiana; David Bertrand of Gueydan, Louisiana; grandchildren, Brittany Marie Kiser, Dylan James Kiser, and Matthew Jacob Kiser.
