Mr. Walter Lewis “W.L.” Thomas of Geneva, Alabama passed away Thursday, March 8, 2012.  He was 88.


 


Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 11, in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home in Slocomb with Dr. Mike Shirah officiating.  Burial will follow in the Memory Hill Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. and continue until service time.


 


In lieu of flowers the family asked that memorial contributions be made to Covenant Hospice, New Prospect Baptist Church in Hartford or Maple Avenue Baptist Church in Geneva.


 


Mr. Thomas, also known as Dub, was born August 1, 1923, in Geneva County, Alabama to the late Horace and Susie Meadows Thomas.  He served during WWII with the United States Navy from March 24, 1944 until January 13, 1946.  He enjoyed farming and retired several years ago.  He was a member of Maple Avenue Baptist church.


 


In addition to his parents, his first wife and mother of his children, Doris Phillips Thomas, one brother, Paul Thomas, and two sisters, Lois Thomas Hinson and Jean Thomas, all preceded him in death.


 


Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Juanita Skinner Mims Thomas, Geneva, AL; sons: Rex (Linda) Thomas, Tallahassee, FL, Randall (Cynthia) Thomas, Hartford, AL; step-children: Ricky (Sondra) Mims, Marietta, GA, Laurie (Randall) Meeks, Geneva, AL, Ronnie (Beverly) Mims, Vestavia, AL, Anthony (Jean) Mims, Geneva, AL; grandchildren: Pam (Jim) Coogan, Rocky (Kathy) Thomas, Becky Thomas, Julie (Brandon) Alday, Bryan Thomas, Burke (Carrie) Thomas, Ashley (Jon) Patterson, Whitney (Rick) Swatloski, Kacie (Jody) Medley, Karie Kilpatrick, Baker Mims, Olivia Mims, Mollie Mims, Austin Mims, Sydney Mims; great-grandchildren: Jessica, Bradley, and Jared Coogan, Jerritt and Addison Thomas, Dylan, Doris and Abigail Thomas, Stafford Winchester, Aubrey Duval and Avery Thomas, Callie and Hayes Alday, Braden and Marlie Medley, Merrick Kilpatrick, Eli and Gavin Patterson, Hunter Swatloski; sisters: Bessie Laseter, Dothan, AL, Lottie Dodd, Laurel, MS, Sarah Heffron, NC; brother, Jessie (Bobbie) Thomas, Slocomb, AL; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. 


 


Serving as active pallbearers will be Burke Thomas, Rocky Thomas, Jim Coogan, Brandon Alday, Baker Mims, Austin Mims and John Allen Phillips.
