OZARK…Mr. W.H. “Bill” Compton (Sergeant, Alabama Army National Guard, Retired), a resident of Ozark, died Friday, September 6, 2024, in a Birmingham hospital. He was 81.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, September 12, 2024, in Southside Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Tim Bates and Reverend Dr. Dennis Tew officiating. Graveside services, with full military honors, will follow in the church cemetery. Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Thursday at the church.
Mr. Compton, son of the late Charles Compton and Lois Jacobs Compton, was a native of the Birmingham area. He formerly lived in Selma before moving to Ozark in 1972. Mr. Compton was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was retired from the Alabama Army National Guard. He was also retired as a firefighter with Civil Service at Fort Rucker, Alabama. In earlier years, he was a Pee Wee Football coach for several years. He enjoyed woodworking and was an avid University of Alabama Football fan. Mr. Compton was an active and faithful member of Southside Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Trudy Compton and a brother, Roger Compton.
Surviving relatives include his children, Kelly Shiver (Rick), Midland City, Mary Herring (Kirk), Savannah, Georgia, Steven Compton (Bobbie), Goose Creek, South Carolina, Jason Compton (Tammy), Choctaw, Oklahoma, and Shane Turner (Karen), Dothan; siblings, Herschel Compton, Leeds, Alabama, James Compton, Greensboro, North Carolina, and Brenda Cuthrell, Springville, Alabama; grandchildren, E’lana Nowell, Micah Waddell (Jeffery), Ryan Compton (Diana), William Shiver (Paige), Shelby Herring, Shane Turner, Brooke Folds (Matt), Ian Compton, and Paityn Stone (Quamiq); sixteen great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
