Mr. Joseph Emmitt Chirstmas, Jr. age 98, a resident of Cottonwood passed away July 19, 2016 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 21, 2016 at the Cottonwood First Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Bolin and Dr. Charles Christmas Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Cottonwood City Cemetery with Kendall Glover directing.
The family will be receiving friends at Cottonwood First Baptist Church on Thursday from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cottonwood First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 427, Cottonwood, AL 36320 or Gentiva Hospice, 2740 Headland Ave, Dothan, AL 36303.
Mr. Christmas was born on September 15, 1917 in Cottonwood, AL the son of Joseph Ernest Christmas and Antie Hughes Christmas. He was a 1936 graduate of Cottonwood High School and was the last surviving member of the first football team. Mr. Christmas was the owner of Christmas Home Builders. He was Deacon Emeritus and Sunday school teacher of Cottonwood First Baptist Church. He was a WWII Veteran with the Army Air Corps. He enlisted the day after Pearl Harbor was Bombed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 73 years, Miriam Rebecca Hicks Christmas; daughter, Becky Steele; son-in-law, Alvin Steele; three sisters, Martha Lunsford, Nell Lathrop and Wylline Williams; two brothers, W.J. and Robert Earl Christmas.
Survivors include: two daughters, Sheryl Christmas, Patricia Carter both of Cottonwood, AL; brother, Charles Christmas, Sr., Memphis, TN; brother-in-law, Ernest Williams, Dothan, AL; sister-in-law Edna Christmas, Auburn, AL; five grandchildren, Blake Hall (Jenny), Florence, AL, Tyson Carter (Kelly), Dothan, AL, Clay Carter (Mamie), Cottonwood, AL, Dana Hill, Danville, AL, Maria Blaxton, Danville, AL; six great-grandchildren, Owen Carter, Emma Carter, Claire Carter, Talmadge Hall, Caleb Hill, MaRay Blaxton; several nieces and nephews.
Special thank you to the caring staff of Gentiva Hospice, and thanks also to Bro. Jimmy Bolin, Joanne Jackson and James Killingsworth for the special care they provided.
Pallbearers will be: Blake Hall, Tyson Carter, Clay Carter, Owen Carter, Billy Max Hall, James Killingsworth, and Dale Nichols.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Former Cottonwood Bears Football Players.
Glover Funeral Home of Dothan has been entrusted with the arrangements.
