Mrs. Bonnie Ruth Griggs Pullen, 95, of Dothan, originally of the Asbury Community of Ozark, AL, died Wednesday, April 4, 2018.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 P. M. on Sunday, April 8, 2018, in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home and Cremations in Ozark with Reverend Allie Freeman officiating. Interment will follow in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends Sunday at the funeral home in Ozark from 1:00 P.M. until service time.
Mrs. Pullen was born on April 1, 1923 in the Asbury Community of Dale County, AL to the late John Wiley Griggs and Nona Pearl Newman Griggs. She graduated from Dale County High School in 1942. Soon after graduation, Mrs. Pullen began working for the Western Union Company in Ozark, AL. Her work at Western Union included traveling throughout the State of AL, filling in for vacationing Western Union employees. While filling in for one such employee in Cullman, AL, she met her beloved husband Troy. They were married on September 29, 1945 and remained married until his death on June 27, 1958. Mr. and Mrs. Pullen founded The Sock Center, a sock, hosiery and sundries store in the early 1950s on 2nd Avenue North in Birmingham, Alabama. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Pullen continued to run the business successfully on her own, until her retirement. While Mrs. Pullen had no children, she was a loving, kind and generous “second mother” to all her nieces and nephews and “grandmother” to their children. Mrs. Pullen was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Homewood, AL where she was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class, and First United Methodist Church, Dothan, AL. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Troy William Pullen; one sister, Frances Griggs Snell and brother-in-law, Lewie Frank Snell; her brother, Wiley Hilbert Griggs and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Brown Griggs; brothers-in-law Tommy Shewmake and Ebben T. Snell; nephews W. Glen Griggs and Jimmy Snell.
Survivors include two sisters, Myra Griggs Shewmake and Celeste Griggs Snell of Dothan; nieces and nephews, Jerry Snell, Judy Trawick, Joy Childers, Joe Snell, Sandra Shipman, John Shewmake, Mike Shewmake, Bobby Shewmake, Dennie Moorehead, Amy Griggs, Amanda Barber and Ebben Snell; numerous great nieces and nephews; and special friend, Carole Cudd.
The family would like to express special thanks and gratitude to the nurses and staff of The Terrace at Grove Park, Westside Terrace, Yvonne Bryant, Alvin Cotton, and Anointed Touch Caregiver Services.
