Mrs. Doris Rachael Jones Richardson, a resident of Ariton, died Tuesday morning, July 25, 2023, in Dale Medical Center. She was 97 years old. Funeral services for Mrs. Richardson will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 29, 2023, from Ariton Baptist Church with Reverend Dave Walsh officiating. Interment will follow in Ariton Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
The family will receive friends Saturday in the church from 9:30 A.M. until service time.
Mrs. Richardson was born April 23, 1926 in Ariton, Alabama to the late Noah Z. Jones and Ruby Virginia Laney Jones. She worked with the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Ariton for fifteen years and then with the Dale County Board of Education in the central office, retiring following ten years of service. Mrs. Richardson was a member of the Ariton Baptist Church for 89 years where she served in most of the official capacities of the church at one time or another. She was a member of the Ariton Matrons Study Club for over twenty-five years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Charles Mathis “Matt” Richardson; three sisters, Mary Dickert (Bunyan), Martha Simmons (Tharrel) and Sara Tatum (Jerl); one brother, Jack Jones (Tat).
Survivors include one daughter, Dianne Smith (Joseph) of Ozark; one son, Dale Richardson (Judy) of Montgomery, Texas; two granddaughters, Kimberly Walkley (Quinn) of The Woodlands, Texas and Kellie Estes (Randy) of Cypress, Texas; two grandsons, Matthew Smith (Maggie) of Panama City Beach, Florida and Lee Smith of Fairhope, Alabama; one special “adopted” grandson, Truett Mills of Fairhope, Alabama; four great grandchildren, Violet Smith and Gray Smith of Panama City, Florida and Addison Estes and Samantha Estes of Cypress, Texas. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made in her memory to Ariton Baptist Church, 157 Atlantic Road, Ariton, Alabama 36311. The family would like to express special thanks to her current and past caregivers: Catherine Patterson, Kelly Kroger, Lynn Kroger, Bernice Rivers and Barbara Sammons.
