Doris Snell Adkins, daughter of Guy Dale Snell and Ruth Murphy Snell and wife of the late Jack Adkins, passed away on Tuesday, October 23, 2024 at Extendicare Health Center, surrounded by her loving family at the age of 97.


Doris was born on July 6, 1927 in her grandfather’s home. As a child, she was a Daddy’s girl and would often help him harvest and sell cotton. She was the oldest of six siblings, whom she loved very much. She could often be found carrying one of her baby sisters on her hip.


In 1944, she married the love of her life, Jack Adkins and they began to grow their family. Doris spent many years working for Dr. Paul Flowers where she made many life-long friends. As her children grew their families, Doris retired to care for her grandchildren. She was known to cook delicious meals, which was how she expressed her love for her family and friends. Doris loved to travel and would often take road trips for hundreds of miles with friends. She loved to cook, sew and garden. Doris will be remembered by her family and friends as being selfless, forgiving, loving and hardworking.


Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Adkins; her parents, Guy & Ruth Snell; her daughter, Tana Adkins McGhee; her sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette & Lloyd Knight, her sister and brother-in-law, Gayle & RQ Taylor; her brother and sister-in-law, Gerald & Judy Snell; and her brother-in-law, Jerome Baxley.


Doris is survived by two children, Jackie Adkins Armstrong (Eugene), Tim Adkins (Rebecca) and son-in-law, Ron McGhee; six grandchildren, Ben Armstrong (Traci), Martin Armstrong (Lynn) Jessica Carty (Mike), Ashley Michael (Trey), Austin Adkins (Kayla), and Baylor Miller; 11 great- grandchildren, Harley Armstrong, Kala Elmore, Kyle Collins, Jack & Owen Carty, Lucy, William, Ruthie & John Wallace Michael, Lelan Diaz, and Waylon Adkins; four great-great grandchildren, Kendan & Chloi Miller, Josie Elmore, and Charlotte Collins; two sisters, Peggy Baxley and Gloria Stringer (Morris).


Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, October 26, 2024 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Brother Vann Cooley, Pastor Tony Deese, and Pastor Drew Stringer officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 PM until 2 PM, prior to the service at the funeral home.


Pallbearers will be the Adkins grandsons, Ben & Martin Armstrong, Jack & Owen Carty, and Austin Adkins, and nephew, Michael Stringer.


The Adkins Family would like to thank the special nurses & staff of Hall 7 at Extendicare Health.
