Obituary: Dorothy Dean McKinnon Smith


 


Dorothy Dean McKinnon Smith, a life-long resident of Wicksburg passed away Friday, February 16, 2018 at her home on Thomley Road. She was 94.  


Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Goodwater Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Lunsford and Pastor John Dowdey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Slocomb directing. 


The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 2:00 p.m. and continuing until service time. 


Flowers will be accepted or you may honor Dorothy’s memory with your contributions to Goodwater Free Will Baptist Church 41 State Highway 103, Newton, AL 36352 or the Church At The Crossing Building Fund, 208 T.V. Road, Dothan, AL 36301. 


She was born April 26, 1923 to the late Charlie and Daisy Trawick McKinnon in the Jellico Community and graduated from Wicksburg High School in 1941. Dorothy was an employee at Burlington Hosiery Mill where she worked on the manufacturing line until the plant closed. At that time she became employed by the State of Alabama as a caregiver, assisting in home health until she retired in 1971. Dorothy loved her family and church community at Goodwater Free Will Baptist Church. She could always be found outdoors tending to her garden and flower beds.  


In addition to her parents, Grandson, Ryan Smith; siblings: Merrill Hicks, Sadie Thomley and C.K. McKinnon and other loved ones all preceded her in death.


She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Daughtry (Royce); son, Douglas Smith (Marilyn); nephew, Charles Thomley (Valeria); grandchildren: Carl Wood, Brandy Dowdey (John), Robin McKinney (James); great-grandchildren: Bailey Wood, Chasen Wood, Hannah Williams (Anthony), Spencer Smith, Tyler Dowdey, Sara Beth Cook, Drew McKinney, Makala McKinney and Madison McKinney; great-great grandchildren: Aaron Williams and Raiden Williams; other extended family and friends.The family would like to thank Alacare and all those who cared for Dorothy during the time of her passing.
