Mrs. Edith Ann McGowan Bennett, age 81, of Dothan, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021 surrounded by her family.


Edith was born October 23, 1939 in Geneva County, Alabama to the late James Curtis McGowan, Sr. and Vallie Jones McGowan. Edith loved life and found happiness in helping her family and in helping others. She raised six children and was always putting her family first and foremost in her life. She loved her weekly trips to a local Mexican restaurant with her sister, Linda and best friend, Sue.


In addition to her parents, Edith was preceded in death by her husband, H. W. "Bill" Bennett; her brothers, James Curtis McGowan, Jr., William Albert McGowan, Franklin McGowan, and Henry McGowan; her sisters, Louise Roney, Mary Nell Martin, JoAnn Futrell, Ruth Carr, Janie Hatcher, and Martha Sue Carr; and her granddaughter, Maddy-Mae McCarthy.


Edith is survived by her daughters, Teresa Thompson of Crestview, FL, Tonya Blakeney of Geneva, AL, Samantha Street (Harold) of Dothan, AL, and Gina McCarthy (Greg) of Dothan, AL; her sons, Steven Pippin of Hartford, AL and Jeffrey Bennett (Shea) of Panama City, FL; her sister, Linda Bowdoin of Dothan, AL; her grandchildren, Jennifer Whisman, Kristina Cady, Kimberly Simpson, Jeremy Sowell, Jessica Sowell Melancon, Chase Blakeney, Jonathan Pippin, Lana Ratliff, Stuart Hilton, Valli Barber, Gracie Bennett, Penelope Guzman, Alivia Bennett, Libby-Lu McCarthy, and Addie-Ann McCarthy; her great-grandchildren, Dustin Whisman, Parker Borland, Mikayla Cady, Dakota Manring, Tayten Cady, Amiah Baker, Kinley Simpson, Lincoln Simpson, Luke Sowell, Noah Sowell, Abbie Melancon, Maddox Melancon, Cruz Stefanson, Christopher Ratliff, Lillie Bennett, Paislee Mae Barber, Bennett Barber, and Avery Pippin; her great-great-grandchildren, Kennedy Whisman and Kylie Whisman; her special friend, Sue Dean; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Reverend Clyde Ellison officiating.
