Eleanor “Jean” Huckaby, a resident of Gordon, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2024 at Flowers Hospital. She was 88.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, September 22, 2024 in the Clearman Chapel at Southern Heritage Funeral Home with Dr. Sammy Prim officiating and Southern Heritage directing. Burial will follow in Gordon Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 PM to 2 PM prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Gordon Baptist Church Post Office Box 148 Gordon, Alabama 36343.
Jean was born on August 12, 1936. She was born and raised in Malone, Florida and was a 1954 graduate of Malone High School. Jean married her late husband, Buddy on October 31, 1954, and was a devoted wife for over 57 years. Together, they raised one daughter and started a business. Jean and Buddy founded Huckaby’s Super Service, later known as Huckaby Oil Company on November 1, 1958. They ran a successful family-owned business for 53 years.
Outside of the store, Jean enjoyed cooking, baking, fishing, spending time with her family, helping others in the community, and going to church. She served as treasurer for Gordon Baptist Church for the past 10 years, where she was a member. She never passed up the opportunity to talk about her grandchildren.
Jean is preceded in death by her husband, James “Buddy” Huckaby; parents, Louis Ham, Eula Mae and Harold Dekle; siblings, C.W. Ham, Mary Alice McDonald, Hayes Ham; and a niece, Stephanie Ham.
She is survived by her daughter, Loretta Womack and her husband Carl, Pansey; two grandchildren, Jason Koen, Gordon, and Ginny Koen Miller and her husband Bryn, Gordon; two great grandchildren, Bryntley and Shelby Miller; a brother, George Dekle, Malone; as well as six nieces and two nephews.
Serving as pallbearers will be Bryn Miller, Gene Womack, Jamie Jeffcoat, Albert Lowe, Lee Fitch, and Ed Ham.
Honorary pallbearers will be Nathan Worsham, and Bobby Snellgrove.
