Mrs. Elinor Jewel Smith Chisholm of Dothan passed away November 9, 2015 at Southeast AL Medical Center. She was 89.
Graveside services will be held 11 AM Thursday November 12, 2015 at Memory Hill Cemetery with Dr. Joseph Johnson officiating and Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.
Elinor was born in Eufaula, AL October 7, 1926. She graduated from Barbour County High School in 1944 and Troy State Teachers College in 1951. She received her Masters of Education and Education Specialist degree from Georgia Southern College. She did additional work at the University of Georgia in Special Education. She taught school in Enterprise, AL before moving to Hinesville, GA where she taught for ten years. She completed 35 years in education at Ft. Stewart, GA. While there she served as a teacher’s counselor, school psychologist, coordinator of special education, assistant principal and principal.
Elinor was selected Teacher of the Year in 1972 at Ft. Stewart and was selected Woman of the year by the American Business Women’s Association. She also served on visiting teams for the Association of Colleges and Schools.
She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years Kenneth H. Chisholm; four step-children Teresa Dowey of Columbia SC, Deborah (Frank) Nettles of Ridgeland, SC, Cindi (David) Fedor of Hilton Head Island, SC and Kenneth Chisholm, Jr. (Nubia) of Norfolk, VA. She is also survived by nine step-grandchildren and ten great-step- grandchildren, one nephew and his family, Delmar Smith along with several brothers and sisters in law.
Elinor was preceded in death by her parents Carlie and Eva Smith, two brothers Dowling and Carlie Smith, Jr.; a sister-in-law, Lena Belle Smith; a nephew, Harold Smith.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Helen Bennett Scholarship Fund at Evergreen Presbyterian Church at 1103 N. Pontiac Ave, Dothan, AL 36303.
