Mrs. Elsie Lanier Meeker, a resident of Dothan, died Sunday afternoon, July 28, 2024 at Westside Terrace Rehab after a short illness. She was 94.

Elsie Meeker was born on June 21, 1930 to Jim Tom and Gypsy Louise Lanier in Albany, Georgia. She along with her sister, Louise, were members of a loving family, spending her early years in Albany, Georgia, then Eufaula and Dothan, Alabama where she graduated from Dothan High School.

Elsie was registered at Auburn University, but instead followed love and got married to Francis Meeker on July 2, 1947. She and Francis owned Meeker’s Grocery and Market jointly with Francis’s twin brother, Franklin Meeker. They operated Meeker’s Grocery for approximately 40 years. Elsie and Francis had three children. They were active members of First Baptist Church of Dothan for over 50 years together.

She was a very loving mother, wife, and sister, as well as being an “involved” parent. She worked in the school as a substitute teacher, volunteering in the PTA, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and anywhere she was needed. She loved the Lord and was faithful to her church and family teaching children’s Sunday School for many years. She was a highly skilled housewife and mother, passing on many skills such as sewing, cooking, and etiquette.

She was also a sports parent, in baseball, softball, and tennis. And she went on many campouts and fishing trips together with her husband, Francis. She and Francis supported all three children through college. At this time, she worked as a sales person for Zales Jewelers and then later for Persian Gallery in Dothan.

In later years, Elsie and Francis enjoyed traveling on bus trips with their church friends. She continued to teach Christian family values to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren throughout her life.

She was supporter of the Dothan Tennis Association and contributed to the “building fund” for Westgate Tennis Center. She also enjoyed playing tennis with friends in her later years.

Elsie is preceded by her husband, Francis Meeker and her eldest child, Denny Meeker. She is survived by her children, Jerri Dennis and husband, Gary of Verbena, Alabama, and Kim Meeker and wife, Robin of Dothan; her grandchildren, Christi Mitchell and husband, David of Clanton, AL, Michael Carroccino of Ajo, Arizona, Amy Meeker of Cullman, AL, Jennifer Garrett and Husband Matthew of Dothan; her great grandchildren, Caedmon and Mirella Carroccino, Dennis Mitchell, Abrhim and Abel Garrett.
