Frances Lanton, 87, of Dothan, Alabama, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2016 at Wesley Manor. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 2:30 P.M. at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Reverend Jimmy Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:30 P.M prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations may be made to Wesley Manor or SARCOA.

Mrs. Lanton was born August 21, 1928 in Cuthbert, Randolph County, Georgia to Charlie H. and Mallie Ann Mills Railey. She moved to Columbia as a child.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by seven siblings. Her first Husband and father of her children, Gene Calhoun. Their son, Edward, and her second husband, Shelby Lanton.

Frances worked extremely hard all her life. She enjoyed her children, gardening, working in her yard, and fishing.

She had a kind spirit, but could certainly stand her ground. She was also humble and caring. She never asked for anything; she treated people the way she wished to be treated. Frances was the most content person; she had a way of making you laugh with her wit and humor. Her personal strength and determination served her well in times of adversity.

As adult children, we had the privilege of not only having her as our mother, but as our friend.

Her ancestry is proven to the American Colonies, The Daughters of the American Revolution, The Daughters of the Confederacy, and the First Families of Alabama.

A special thank you to Dr. Ted Paulk, Dr. Michael O’Brian, and the staff of the south wing at Wesley Manor.

Survivors include, Frank Calhoun; Laura Galloway (special son-in-law, Rudolph), William Calhoun, and Martha Conner; grandchildren, Jonathan Galloway, Michelle Etheridge, Terry Conner, Josh Calhoun, Tammy Pearson; nieces, Ruth Norris and Jaunita Smith; nephew, Donald Smith.
