Gertrude Boutwell Day
Gert Day, age 96, passed from this life to her eternal home on Friday, March 10th, 2023, after a brief illness. Mrs. Day was a long-time resident of Dothan after she, her husband, and their children first moved to Dothan, Al. in 1954 after having been previously stationed in Japan.
Mrs. Day was the youngest of 9 brothers and sisters and was born in Eastman, GA to Jack and Eula Boutwell on May 15, 1926. She attended school in Dodge County Georgia and married PFC Lamar P. Day USMC, on Christmas Day 1944 while he was home on leave from the western Pacific during WWII. Throughout their military career, Mr. and Mrs. Day traveled to many worldwide locations as he remained in military and federal civil service for more than 45 years.
She was a faithful woman who loved the Lord and served her home church (Grandview Baptist-Dothan) in various capacities for over 65 years. She served as a dedicated member, Sunday school teacher, choir member, library director, and was an active member of numerous church committees.
She was predeceased by her parents, siblings, and husband of more than 60 years. She is survived by her children Dianne Lapides-Clearwater, FL; Kathy (Bob) Buckley-Forsyth, GA; Steve (Karen) Day-Auburn AL. and 5 grandchildren, Karen (Enayat) Oliver-Tarpon FL; Christa (Stephen) Norris-Huntsville, AL; Zack (Chelsea) Buckley-Marietta, GA; Ryan Day-Atlanta, GA and Garrett Day-Portsmouth, NH. She is also survived by 4 great-grandchildren Anna Gordon, Maya Oliver, Cameron Norris and Ella Buckley.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday March 19, 2023, at Ward-Wilson Funeral Home in Dothan, Al. Visitation with family and friends will begin at 1pm with a funeral and graveside service beginning at 2pm. Pallbearers will be: David Caraway, Don Canady, Charles Brannan, Tim Newell, Zack Buckley, Ryan Day, Garrett Day.
The Day family would like to extend thanks to the owners and caretakers at Carousel Home Care, Forsyth, Ga. John, Patience, Tasha and Victoria, for the love and care they extended to their Mother in recent months. Also, to Dr. Jeremy Goodwin and Tammy Barnett NP for their medical care over the past few years. The family is also grateful to the staff at Compassus Hospice for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Grandview Baptist Church Building Fund, 2400 Forrester Road, Dothan, Alabama 36301.
