Mrs. Gladys Verneal Pumphrey Runnels of Oakview Manor in Ozark, Alabama passed away on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at the age of 83.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 2 PM CST at Hillside Church, 6687 Brushy Pond Road in Grand Ridge, Florida with Reverend Dallas Ellis officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Verneal was born on August 4, 1935 in Marianna, Florida to the late Hershell and Lucrecia Pumphrey. She was a loving mother and caregiver to her family and loved her grandchildren unconditionally. She was the biggest fan the Atlanta Braves ever had. Her other passions included cooking and sewing.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Shelby Dean Runnels; her son, Robert Payne; and her brothers, Paul David Pumphrey and Willard Alsobrook.
Survivors include three daughters, Phyllis Elizabeth Runnels Greene, Stephanie Dianne Outlaw, and Rosemary Prine Hoodless; one son, Wendell Kenneth Runnels; three sisters, Norma Ellis, Mae Bishop, and Berta Keen (John); two brothers, Donald Pumphrey and Doyle Pumphrey (Lynette); two sisters-in-laws, Peggy Parker and Anita Pumphrey; seven grandchildren, Amanda Beckman, Joshua Outlaw, Jessie Robbins, Isaiah Bass, Spencer and Jordan Payne, and April Miller; ten great-grandchildren, Scarlett Smith, Addison Beckman, Hendrix Beckman, Bella Robbins, Colton Robbins, Ava Payne, Emma Payne, and Bennett Payne, and Hunter and Daniel Miller; numerous other relatives and friends.
A special thanks to Ruthie and all the staff at Oakview Manor as well as Covenant Hospice for taking excellent care of our Mama.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Verneal’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association.
