            Mrs. Irene Wilson Powell of Enterprise passed away on Monday, June 27, 2016 in Enterprise.  She was 102.


 


            Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2016 in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home and Crematory in Enterprise with Rev. David Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory directing.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday beginning at 9:00 and continuing until service time.


 


            Mrs. Powell was born June 22, 1914 in Coldwater, MS to the late William Henry and Sally Boggan Wilson.   After graduating from Humes High School in Memphis, TN, she worked many years as a dental assistant and later, a dental technician.  She taught Sunday School in both Sylvan Heights and McLean Baptist churches.  She was also active in the American Dental Assistant’s Association.  On January 24, 1953, she married Louie L. Powell of Daleville, AL at McLean and moved to Birmingham.  While there, she was a member of the American Business Women’s Association.  After moving to Montgomery, she became active in the Women’s Missionary Union and served as its associational president.  She also was a founding member of the Baptist Hospital’s Women’s Auxiliary.  After moving to Gadsden, she participated in the Federation of Garden Clubs and served as president for several years.  She also served on the Gadsden Beautification Board for 10 years, as well as continuing her commitment to WMU at Bellevue Baptist Church.  In 1998, the Powells moved to Enterprise and had recently been residents at The Terrace at Grove Park in Dothan before moving to Enterprise Health & Rehab.  Mrs. Powell was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Enterprise.


 


            She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Louie L. Powell; three sisters: Exer Lena Crone, Lillie Mae Stewart, Christine Wilson; one brother, William Clyde Wilson; nieces and nephews: Sammy Crone, Alma Chick, and Doris Bazemore.


 


            Survivors include a sister-in-law, Sudie Powell; nieces and nephews: Eileen Cook, Thelma Gaskins, Geneva Mitchell, Tom Powell, Mincy Walden, Eddie Powell, Beth Sievers, Frances Park, Joey Powell, Gayle Stoutamire, and Stephen Powell; numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
