Obituary:  Mrs. Janice McAllister

After a long and valiant battle against two different cancers at the same time, Janice J. McAllister, 68,  was called Home from this Earth on Friday, May 26, 2017.   She felt overwhelming love for and from her husband, Mike McAllister, who walked by her side every step of her journey for nearly 49 years.  They were high school sweethearts who embraced this life together and were inseparable. She gave all to her children, Kristie Mitchell and Scott McAllister, and she was a proud Mimi to six grandchildren.

Janice was the daughter of J.C. and Maxine Smith and lived her entire life in Slocomb, Alabama.  She graduated from Slocomb High School in 1968.  She worked her entire life before retiring in 2006 to spend more time with her family.  She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Patricia Presley.

She leaves behind her husband Mike, her son, Dr. Scott McAllister (Allison) of Dothan and her daughter, Kristie Mitchell (Fred) who live in Oxford, Alabama.  She spoke often and proudly of Kristie who teaches at Oxford High School and formerly at Dothan High School before moving to Oxford three years ago. Janice loved that her daughter became a teacher and loved hearing her teaching stories. Janice also gave so much to help her son Scott attend medical school at UAB and accomplish his dream of becoming a physician.  Scott served as his Mom’s Oncology specialist doctor throughout her battle with cancer.

Janice was blessed with six grandchildren - Grace and Brock Mitchell, John Michael and Molly McAllister, and Anna Grace and Emma Johnson. Her grandchildren were her heart. She and Mike made sure they were there at ballgames, recitals, golf tournaments, and anything to support them. She has one brother, Bobby Pugh. She had many nieces and nephews on both sides of her family. Many aunts, uncles, and cousins have been there to help in so many ways through the years as well.

Family wishes to send a special thank you to the many friends and neighbors who prayed, visited, and loved all of us.

Also special thank you to Dr. Hejal Patel, Dr. Paola Bass, and Dr. Rick Harrelson/Covenant Hospice.  A very special thank you to the nurses and staff at Dothan Hematology and Oncology who always kept her chemo chair waiting and a hug to make her smile.  May God richly bless you all!

Janice set an example by battling her cancers with a strong and thankful Faith in God, a smile in the storm, and a fight to the end.  She always looked for her rainbow.  God has her now.  Her race is run.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 29, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Slocomb with Rev. Larry Newton and Rev. David Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Slocomb directing.

The family will receive friends at the church on Monday beginning at 12:30 p.m. and continuing until service time.
