Jean Head Millwood, age 92, passed away on June 6, 2022 at OpusCare Hospice in Macon. She was born January 22, 1930 in Jefferson Co., Alabama, to Homer Judson Head and Jessie Ada Denty, and was the seventh of their eight children. She was predeceased by her parents and all of her siblings.

She married her first sweetheart and life-long love, James David Millwood, on August 10, 1947 in her parents’ home in Wylam, Alabama, remaining his faithful helpmate for almost 72 years until his death in 2019.  Everyone who knew them said they were “joined at the hip” because they were rarely apart.  Jean was a faithful companion and supporter for Dave, delighting in serving as a Pastor’s wife in each of the many churches he pastored in Georgia, Alabama, and Florida; (A minister who knew her very well described her as a perfect pastor’s wife); serving beside him when they witnessed to prisoners as part of the Bill Glass Prison Ministry; working closely with him as they served on church mission trips to many different states; climbing ladders to help him fix the roof on their houses; serving as his assistant on one of the constant carpentry projects to reconfigure space in the house or add on; helping him move so many times they actually lost count; in short, if J.D. was somewhere, Jean was with him, a constant source of support. Since his death, she has sorely missed him, and it is a great consolation to know that they are finally together again.

The church was always important to Jean. As a young child, without the support of her parents who rarely attended church, she was faithful in her attendance, walking some distance by herself. It was through her influence that Dave became a dedicated Christian, and her children were brought up in the church. She has always been an eager and enthusiastic participant in Women’s Missionary activities, Sunday School Classes, and church choirs (although everyone knew she was always off key, she sang with gusto and a great spirit!).

She was a gentle soul, a friend to everybody, always wanting to help, and never expecting anything in return. Whenever you met her, you instantly noticed the big smile on her face and the warm, welcoming tone of her voice. A grateful person, she faced any hardships with courage, humility, dignity, grace, and a level of faith that was awesome.

She is survived by her four children: Regina Millwood Schuber and husband, Mickey Schuber, Athens, GA; James Millwood and wife, Debbie Arnold Millwood, Greenwood, FL; Betty Jean Mathis, Marianna, FL; Jesse Millwood and wife Rita Lipford Millwood, Hawkinsville, GA; nine grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. She also had three great-grandchildren who preceded her in death.

Visitation will be at Ward-Wilson Funeral Home in Dothan, AL from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2022 followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the First Baptist Church Women on Mission, 405 Bellevue Ave., Dublin GA 30121, or to a charity of your choice.
