She was born on December 6, 1949 in Samson, AL to the late Hubert and Mildred Nowell Hughes. Lawanna and two of her surviving brothers, Gary Hughes (Lori) and Glen Hughes of Dothan were adopted by the late Ann Nichols Hughes who was married to Hubert for 59 years and shared a son together, Bill Hughes (Kelly) of Stuart, FL who is her third surviving sibling.

Lawanna is a 1967 graduate of Samson High School and completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Troy State University in 1971. After teaching P. E. and serving as cheerleader sponsor for seven years at D. A. Smith in Ozark, Ms. Dykes taught P. E. for 21 years at several Dothan City Schools and enjoyed many lasting friendships with fellow educators and former students. She later completed a Master’s Degree in Counseling from Troy State – Dothan and spent eight years as a Guidance Counselor until her retirement in 2007. In her spare time, Lawanna enjoyed cooking and traveling.

Lawanna loved her family dearly, especially her children, Chad Dykes (Lindsey) and Stacie Dykes, both of Dothan, and she was so incredibly proud of her two grandsons, Carson and Cole. In addition to her immediate family, Lawanna is survived by many nieces and nephews and a host of friends who she loved mightily.

She was a dedicated member of Greystone United Methodist Church (FKA Lafayette Street United Methodist Church) since 1978 where she shared unbreakable bonds with many special people. Lawanna believed with all her heart that Jesus Christ died for our sins, so we can spend eternity with Him and our Heavenly Father. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Greystone United Methodist Church in her loving memory.
