Elva Lou Wakefield Cothran, known as Lou to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2024, at the age of 102. Born on April 30, 1922, in Hamilton, Alabama, Lou saw many changes both in her family and in the world around her in the span of her life. She departed this life in Hartford, Alabama, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and generosity that will be cherished by many.


Lou was predeceased by her beloved husband, James Arthur Cothran. She is survived by a loving family that includes her daughter, Jane Carr and her husband Tom; stepdaughters, Beverly Stafford and her husband Mark, and Penny Robinson and her husband Rush; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Each of these individuals was touched by Lou’s warmth and unwavering support throughout her remarkable life.


A dedicated member of Pathway Baptist Church, Lou’s faith was a cornerstone of her existence. Her commitment to her church community was evident in her active participation and the joy she found in fellowship with her church family.


Lou had a passion for the simple pleasures in life. She found great joy in flowers and could often be found tinkering in her yard, nurturing her garden into a place of beauty and tranquility. Above all, Lou cherished spending time with her family. Her home was a hub of laughter, storytelling, and the kind of wisdom that can only be gained through a well-lived life.


Funeral services for Lou will be held at 2 PM, Thursday, September 12, 2024 from the Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Rodney Anderson officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Pathway Baptist Church, 3551 Flowers Chapel Road, Dothan, AL  36305.
