Mrs. Lucille Byrd passed away peacefully on the afternoon of June 9, 2012, surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm, Monday, June 11, 2012 at Shiloh Baptist Church in Hartford, AL with Reverend Buddy Hood and Reverend Coley Holloway presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 1:00 PM and continuing until service time. Memorials to Shiloh Baptist Church Building fund or flowers will be accepted.
Mrs. Byrd was born in New Brockton, Alabama in 1921. She married JT Byrd in 1938 and together they raised four children. She was an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church and was instrumental in creating a new Hartford Senior Citizens’ Center where she was named Volunteer of the Year in 2010 and 2011. She was beloved by her family and friends for her compassion, faith, and strength. Through her love and wisdom she taught us all how to be better people. Her life was filled with helping others, and her tender kindness and warmth will always be remembered. She now returns to be with the Lord. She was preceded in death by her husband JT Byrd and son Thuron Byrd.
She is survived by her children, Gary Byrd of Huntsville, AL, Ray and Carol Hix of Dothan, AL, and Rick Byrd of Hartford, AL; brothers: Buford Benefield (Shirley) of Dothan, AL, Ben Crawford (Marj) of Melborne, FL, and Coy Crawford of Gainesville, FL; sister-in-law, Faye Crawford, Dothan, AL; eight grandchildren: Beth Byrd of Bay Village, OH, Cathy Byrd of Nashville, TN, Karen Hubbard of Huntsville, AL, Ray Hix, Jr. (Ashlye) of Loxley, AL, Jane Dudley (Brent) of Alpharetta, GA, Jennifer Suydan (Craig) of Donalsonville, GA, Amy Harris of Nashville, TN, and Andrea Derby (Jonathan) of New York, NY; seven great grandchildren: Alex Hubbard, Jacob Hubbard, Emilee Nunnery, Madeline Dudley, Ward Hix, Brent Dudley, Jr., and Win Hix; special friends, Sheila and Frank Eady of Dothan.
Serving as pallbearers will be Ray Hix, Jr., Brent Dudley, William Birdsong, Craig Suydan, Jonathan Derby, John Downs.
