OZARK… Mrs. Margaret Lavinia Butts Fields, a resident of Ozark, died early Saturday morning, November 6, 2021, at her home. She was 77.

In keeping with her wishes, there are no public services planned. Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret was born on February 7, 1944, in Newport News, Virginia as the first of seven children to Frank Smith and Audrey Cambridge Smith also of Newport News, Virginia. She passed away peacefully on November 6, 2021, at her home in Ozark, Alabama. She had been ill for three months from cancer and elected not to undergo the normal treatments but never complained of pain or extreme tiredness until the last two weeks of her life. She wanted to die in her home with her husband being her only caregiver and the only family member that knew about her cancer. She requests that no funeral or memorial service be performed and that she be cremated and have her ashes spread in the Chesapeake Bay by her husband and her sons.

Margaret was survived by her husband, Wayne Raymond Fields; her two sons, Alan and Dale butts that live in Hampton and Newport News; stepson, Stephen Fields, who lives in San Jose, California, with his wife and family; two sisters, Ann Smith also from Newport News, Virginia and Fran Faria who lives with her husband, Russ in Newton, Alabama. She also had many other family members living in the wiregrass area around Ozark. She was preceded in death by her two younger sisters, Shirley Smith of Newport News and Susie Gentry who had lived with her husband, Randy Gentry in Ozark, Alabama. Margaret married Captain Wayne (Ray)Fields of the U.S. Army in Hampton, Virginia in front of family and friends.

Margaret enjoyed the traveling adventure with Ray across the United States as well as in several European countries and Margaret and Ray moved to Ozark after he retired from USTRAMSCOM at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, friend, and homemaker. She had extensive experience in food service and catering and had catered many major events at the Hampton Coliseum as well as several in Ozark and across Europe. She received several awards and honors from Officers Wives Clubs and Community Commanding Generals in several military communities in Europe that she and Ray supported during their seven years of moving around Europe. Margaret was truly a “One in a Million” wife and was loved and will be sorely missed.
