Mrs. Martha Jean Nordan Wells, formerly of Ashford and Dothan, Al, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on April 17, 2017 in Nashville, TN.

She was born on September 16, 1929 to William Addis Nordan and Gussie Lunsford Nordan Clearman in Dothan, Alabama.

Mrs. Wells graduated from Dothan High School where she enjoyed being a majorette in the band. She matriculated to the University of Alabama and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. While in college she met and married her husband of 64 years, Dr. James C. Wells, who preceded her in death.

Dr. and Mrs. Wells began their married life in Atlanta but moved to Ashford, Alabama where Dr. Wells practiced dentistry and Mrs. Wells was an active member of the community. She participated in many community organizations including the Arthritis Foundation, the March of Dimes, the Miss Ashford pageant, the Dental Auxiliary, and the Ashford Study Club. She held many offices in these organizations and contributed much to the Ashford community. She and Dr. Wells were co-founders of Ashford Academy and Wayside Baptist Church. Mrs. Wells served in the church in many capacities including working with the youth and the music ministry. More recently they were members of Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Dothan where Mrs. Wells was an active member of the Mary Carpenter Sunday School class, loved singing in the choir, and she founded a food basket ministry.

Mrs. Wells had a flair for interior design and loved everything involved with fashion. She was also a very supportive wife to her husband by working in his dental office for many years as well as joining him in his love of Alabama football and traveling to most home games. In his later years, she cared for him with much love and devotion as he declined with Alzheimer’s disease. Due to his declining health they moved to Nashville to be near family and she made the move with much grace. She will be remembered for always giving a smile and offering a hug. Her gift of encouragement blessed many.

She is survived by her children James Curtis Wells, Jr. (Patty) of Montgomery, Al. and David Christopher Wells (Eleanor) of Nashville, TN; grandchildren, David Wells (Meredith), John Wells (Alayna), and Katie Wells Creed (Jamie); and great-grandchildren, Henry Wells, Eliza Wells, James Wells and Leighton Wells.

Funeral services will be at 2pm Friday, April 21, 2017 at Ward-Wilson Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Memory Hill cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2:00 prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to Ridgecrest Baptist Church, Dothan.
