Mrs. Mary Emma Hartzog Portwood, a resident of Ariton, died Wednesday, February 21, 2018. She was 89 years old.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A. M. Saturday, February 24, 2018, in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home and Cremations in Ozark with Reverend Joey Pettis and Reverend Dave Walsh officiating. Interment will follow in Center Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends Saturday at the funeral home in Ozark from 10:00 A.M. until service time.
Mrs. Portwood was born November 16, 1928 in Barbour County, Alabama to the late Ewell J. Hartzog and Ella Westbrooks Hartzog. She attended Barbour County High School and worked with The Phillip Van Heusen Corporation until her retirement. Mrs. Portwood was a member of Ariton Baptist Church and a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Cecil Portwood; one sister, Frances Hartzog Portwood; and two brothers, Ray Hartzog and Peyton Hartzog.
Survivors include two daughters, Johnnie Helms (Gerald) of Clio, Rita Moffett (Rodney) of Ariton; two grandsons, Lowell Helms (Ashley) of the Asbury Community, Alan Moffett (Kelly) of Ariton; six great grandchildren, Natalie, Holden, and Hannah Helms, Annie Davis (Tyler), Ian and Asia Moffett; two sisters-in-law, Beth Hartzog of Ariton and Alice Henderson of Abbeville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
