Mary Lillian West, affectionately known as Lillian to her friends and loved ones, was a beacon of light and love throughout her 92 years of life. Born on October 4, 1931, in Houston County, Lillian's journey was one marked by devotion, service, and an unwavering faith that touched the hearts of everyone she encountered. On January 19, 2024, Lillian passed away peacefully in Dothan, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and a family that adored her.

She was the cherished matriarch of a family that includes her children Beverly Knapp and her husband David, Stanley West, and Terri W. Sowell with her husband Berry. Her grandchildren Stephanie Williamson and her husband Pat, Mason Wright, Heath West and his wife Lynsey, Josh West and his wife Melissa, Colby Sowell, and Casey Sowell Wolfe with her husband Riley, along with ten great-grandchildren, will carry forward the values she instilled in them. Lillian's sister, Phyliss Sanders, and her husband Ronnie, as well as her brother Wallace Pitts, will remember her as a guiding force of wisdom and warmth. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, Austin D. Pitts and Flossie Pitts Watson and her husband, David J. West.

For over three decades, Lillian was the proud owner of Lillian's Beauty Salon in Cottonwood, where she not only styled hair but also cultivated a community of friendship, support, and trained a new generation of cosmetologists. Her clients often left with more than just a new look; they left with their spirits lifted, having been in the presence of someone who genuinely cared for their well-being.

Lillian's interests were a reflection of her nurturing soul. Her garden was a vibrant tapestry of flowers that mirrored the beauty she saw in the world. She dedicated 35 years to teaching Sunday School, shaping the faith and character of countless individuals with her gentle guidance. As a member of the Women's Missionary Union (WMU), Lillian's commitment to her faith was unwavering. Her voice, a harmonious blend of joy and devotion, was a staple in the choir at First Baptist Church Cottonwood. In recent years, a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Cottonwood, Lillian was very active and loved her church family.

The words that best describe Lillian—loving, faith-filled, selfless—only scratch the surface of her profound impact. She lived her life as a testament to the power of giving, never seeking recognition but always providing a foundation of support and love for those around her. Her legacy is not one of sorrow but of inspiration, encouraging us all to embody the same spirit of generosity and faith that she so effortlessly displayed. Lillian's journey on earth may have ended, but her influence will continue to resonate for generations to come.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Reverend Tommy White officiating. A private burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 267 Metcalf Street, Cottonwood, AL  36320.
