Mattie Bell Smith, the youngest daughter of Robert W. and Lena Jane Eutsey Smith was born June 8, 1924 in Brundidge, Alabama. She was nurtured and trained in a Christian home along with her siblings. She joined Hopewell AME Church in Brundidge at an early age. After the family moved to Ashford, Alabama, she joined Grant Chapel AME Church where she served faithfully and loyally in many capacities. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She would lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Mattie served as Sunday School teacher, choir member, local Women’s Missionary President, and South Conference Branch of the Women’s Missionary Society Treasurer. She was also a life member of the Women’s Missionary Society. Mattie was a busy servant.
She was a mentor to many boys and girls in Ashford and the surrounding areas. She was an avid sports fan and band parent. Your child was her child or so she thought. She followed the team wherever they went. If there was a ball game, Mattie was there. She loved fishing with her husband and nephew Marcus in her younger years. She loved gardening as well. Mattie was a licensed beautician trained under Mrs. Jessie Sheffield. She was definitely a people person and everyone would agree that she always spoke her mind. She loved gospel music and so enjoyed singing in the choir and supporting the Baby Angels Choir under the direction of Lena George.
Mattie loved her church family and remained a faithful and loyal servant until her health declined. Mattie loved the Lord and her soul is at rest. She always supported the church with her time, talent, and resources, including financially supporting Daniel Alexander Payne College, Birmingham, Alabama. Mattie had a very playful character and you had to know her to love her. She was united in Holy Matrimony to Walter Mack Ryus who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Lonnie, James, and Phil Smith. Sisters: Elder Robbie McKinney, Mavis Smith, Emma Fleming, Leola Smith Griffin Harris, the twins- Mary Smith Trawick and Martha Smith Colvin, and Minnie McCuller. Nephews: Robert Wayne McCuller, Sr., Steve Allen Smith, Leophus Alexander Smith, and Jimmy Lee Smith. She is survived by Nieces: Lena F. George, Linda J. Alford, Emma N. Parsons, Martha M. McCuller, Betty Smith Erby, Michelle Kinsey, Willie Mae Smith, Teresa Ann Issac, and Sisters-in-law, Dorinda Larkin and Katie. Nephews: Rev. Robert Earl Smith (Marlene), Johnny Charles Smith (Ann), Billy Ray Smith (Helen), Danny Harold Smith, Benny Harold McCuller, Christopher Parson III, Harold Jamal Parsons, Marcus Andrea McCuller, Charlie Smith, and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, including Mrs. Rossie, Brenda, and Gloria Smith.
