Mrs. Mattie Lou Reeves McGowan of County Road 6, Black, Alabama passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2014.  She was 85.


 


Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 15, in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home in Geneva with Rev. Johnny Belcher officiating.  Burial will follow in the Hartford City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home and Crematory of Geneva directing.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, March 14, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.


 


Mrs. McGowan was born July 12, 1928, in Pike County, Alabama to the late Walter Monroe and Gertrude Johnson Reeves.  She enjoyed reading and cooking for her family and friends.  She was a very loving and devoted mother and grandmother.


 


In addition to her parents her husband Franklin McGowan, Sr., a granddaughter, Lindsey McGowan, as well as 11 siblings: Will Tom Reeves, Roy Reeves, Watha Reeves, Bertha Matthews, Hattie May Spann, Sybil Fowler, Ruby Owen, Gladys Owens, Sue McDuffie, Bessie Ruth Whittle, and Annie Reeves all preceded her in death.


 


Survivors include two daughters: Nancy McGowan Hawthorne and Cindy (Brace) Barnes, all of Black; three sons: Frank (Jeanie) McGowan, Coffee Springs, David (Shirley) McGowan and Mark McGowan, all of Black; one sister, Irene Foxworth, Geneva; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.


 


Serving as pallbearers will be Ross Hawthorne, Ben Hawthorne, Brace Barnes, Cody Willingham, Adam Commander and Josh Broun.
