Merlene Clark Parmer, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2024, at the age of 95. Born on April 5, 1929 to the late Waller Clinton (W. C.) Clark and Mary Althea Brown Clark, Merlene’s journey began in the heart of the South, where she cultivated a life rich in love and service. She was a cherished member of the Selma Baptist Church for over six decades, where she and her beloved husband Willie, who preceded her in death, worked tirelessly with the youth, instilling values of kindness and compassion.

Merlene was a loving mother to her sons, Joel Parmer and his late wife Melinda and Gary Parmer and his wife Angie. Her legacy continued to blossom through her grandchildren, Donald Jenkins, Alison Breedlove (Jeremy) and Cameron Parmer (Kendall), and she was blessed to see the joy of life anew in her great-grandchildren, Blakely and River Breedlove, Barrett and Zane Parmer.

Merlene’s kitchen was the heart of her home, where the aroma of southern homestyle cooking was a constant invitation to gather and share in life’s simple pleasures. Her recipes were more than just meals; they were a symbol of her generous spirit and her desire to nurture those she loved.

Her zest for life was evident in her refusal to remain idle. Even after retirement, Merlene found joy in working odd jobs, always seeking to remain active and engaged with the world around her. Her hands were rarely still, but her heart was always full.

Merlene was the last leaf on her family tree, preceded in death not only by her husband but also by her brothers, James, Charles, and Hubert Clark, and her sisters, Lorene Mercer, Juanita Richards, and Lucille McLeod.

We celebrate a life beautifully lived and a soul that profoundly touched all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her spirit will continue to live on in the memories of her family and the countless lives she enriched with her boundless love and grace. Merlene’s life will be honored in a service that reflects the warmth and light she brought into this world.

Services celebrating Merlene’s life will be held at 3 PM, Thursday, August 1, 2024 from the chapel at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Reverend Scott Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 2 PM until 3 PM, Thursday, August 1, 2024 prior to the service at the funeral home.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Donald Jenkins, Cameron Parmer, David Richards, Jerry Richards, Jason Richards, and Ryan Richards.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Selma Baptist Church Outreach Ministry, 3255 S Park Avenue, Dothan, Alabama 36301.
