Mrs. Mildred Marsh McArthur McCurdy of Port St. Joe, Florida, formerly of Dothan, Alabama went home to be with her Lord and Savior Monday, October 19, 2015, with her loving and devoted family by her side. She was 88.
Funeral services will be Friday, October 23, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. (EST) at the First United Methodist Church in Port St. Joe, Florida with Dr. Geoffrey Lentz officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. (CST) in Memory Hill Cemetery in Dothan, Alabama with Sorrells Funeral Home and Crematory of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday in Port St. Joe beginning at 10:00 a.m. and continue until service time.
In lieu of flowers the family asked that memorial contributions be made to the Methodist Learning Center, 1001 Constitution Drive, Port St. Joe, FL 32456 or Covenant Hospice.
Mrs. McCurdy was born January 9, 1927, in Geneva County, Alabama to the late Lee Lafayette and Hettie Mae Newton Marsh. She loved working in her yards and proudly shared her flowers with neighbors and friends. She described herself as a Southern Cook, and spoiled grands and great-grands with her famous pound cake. She loved her Lord and proudly served as a minister’s wife in the United Methodist Church. She was a dedicated wife, a devoted mother and a passionate grandmother and great-grandmother.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, James Newton McArthur, Sr., her second husband, Rev. J.W. McCurdy, three brothers, James Marsh, David Marsh and Lee Marsh, Jr., as well as three sisters, Glennie Collins, Mary Glen Heath and Peggy Weeks.
Survivors include one son, James Newton “Sonny Mac” McArthur, Jr. and wife Beth; three daughters, Vicki McArthur Abrams, Gloria Collier, and Sheila McCurdy; ten grandchildren: Winthrop (Mia), David (Julie), Kathi, Dedrick (Monica), Kendra, Scott (Angelica), Bobbi (Clay), Kasey (Kris), Kristin, and Collins (Alex); 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Harrell; two sisters-in-law, Ura Bea Golden and Nadine McCurdy; many special nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.
