Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 2, in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory in Geneva with Dr. Mike Shirah and Rev. Billy Locke officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery in Samson.

Mrs. Carter was born May 3, 1930 in Coffee Springs to the late Clarence Eugene and Delia Inez Anderson Jordan. Nellie worked in the textile industry for many years before retiring. She loved the outdoors: fishing, vegetable gardening, working in her yards and flower beds, cookouts and the beach, anything to keep busy. A faithful Christian, she was a member of Maple Avenue Baptist Church, the 49’s Club and she loved her Sunday school class. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be dearly missed.
In addition to her parents, her first husband and father of her children, Hubert E. Hawthorne; son, Hubert L. Hawthorne; grandson, David L. Hawthorne, granddaughter, April Hawthorne; sister, Frances Wilkerson, brother, Johnny L. Jordon; infant brother, James Jordan and a very special friend, her mother-in-law, Lois Carter (better known as BOBO) all preceded her in death.
Survivors include her loving husband of 32 years, Jessie Dwight Carter, Geneva; daughters: Earnestine H. Shiver (Lamar), Geneva and Brenda J. Zorn (Larry), Westville, FL; sons: Richard E. Hawthorne (Lou), Rodney L. Hawthorne and John D. Hawthorne (Tammy), all of Geneva; step-son, Kevin Carter (Shannon), Geneva; sisters-in-law: Cathie Wallace and Nancy Carter; sisters: Sara Jenkins (Jack), Louise Grimes (Hayward), Gale Howell (Max) and Christine Fleming; brother, Billy E. Jordan; ten grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; fourteen great-great grandchildren with one close by.
Nellie’s grandsons will be serving as pallbearers: Stevie Shiver, Clevie Shiver, Lamar Shiver, Bill Zorn, Kevin Zorn and John Hawthorne.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Gentiva Hospice (Anna, Jessica, Kim, Jim and Dr. Hayden Childs) for the devoted love and care that was given to our wife and mother during her illness.
