Nona Mae Nancy Avera


Nona Mae Avera of Dothan passed away peacefully Monday, September 7, 2015 at Westside Terrace. She was 85.


Funeral services will be at 11 A.M. Friday, September 11, 2015 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kyle Gatlin and Rev. Clint McBroom officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery with Ward Wilson directing.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home at 10:00 and continue until service time.


Nona Mae (Nancy) was born on June 29, 1930 in Starkville, Mississippi and moved to Dothan in 1962 where she became very active in the lives of her four daughters and in the community.  She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and active in the Ladies of the Elks.  She was a member of Highland Park Methodist Church.


She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Lelas Joy Avera and a grandson Kevin Crosby.


 She is survived by daughters Carrie (Willard) Williams, Brenda (Glenn) Crosby, Janine (Alan) Rinderknecht, Lisa Tillery, granddaughters, Michele (Randy) Pelkey, Sheri (Kenneth) Bryan, April (Josh) Hebert and Allison Rinderknecht, grandsons Jeremy Crosby and Justin (Orvokki) Crosby. She is also survived by nine great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.


Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Highland Park Methodist Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association. 


The family would like to thank the staff of Westside Terrace for the loving and professional care that was given to our Mother.
