Obituary: Mrs. Opal Marie Welch Cherry
Mrs. Opal Marie Welch Cherry of Dothan departed this world Thursday, January 17, 2019 after an extended illness with her family by her side. She was 73.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Bethel Baptist Church in the Ardilla Community of Houston County with Rev. Ricky Plummer officiating. Entombment will follow in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home in Slocomb directing.
The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until service time.
Flowers will be accepted or donations in Mrs. Cherry’s honor may be made to the American Liver Foundation, 39 Broadway, Suite 2700, New York, NY 10006.
Mrs. Cherry was born February 5, 1945 in Dayton, Ohio to the late Estell and Sarah Kelley Welch. Marie was a 1963 graduate of Slocomb High School. She loved gardening and the outdoors and her greatest joy came from time spent with her family. She was a loving wife, adoring mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed.
In addition to her parents, brother Wayne Welch and sister-in-law, Carolyn Welch, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, William Earl Cherry, Dothan; daughter, Jamelia Ann Cherry Evans (Paul), Dothan; sons: David Earl Cherry and William Jeffrey Cherry; both of Dothan; grandson, Paul Evans Jr. Dothan; brothers: Freddie Dorsey Welch, Columbus, GA and William Gregory Welch, Malvern; several nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the entire staff of Alacare Hospice for their kindness and care during Opal’s illness.
