Obituary: Mrs. Ouida Mae Adams Gilmore


 


Mrs. Ouida Mae Adams Gilmore of Hartford passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017 at Wiregrass Nursing Home in Geneva.  She was 94. 


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory in Slocomb with Rev. Gary Armstrong officiating. Interment will follow in the Hartford City Cemetery. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers. 


The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday beginning at 1:00 p.m. and continuing until service time. 


Mrs. Gilmore was born August 3, 1923 in Geneva County to the late Joe C. and Mae Bell Shiver Adams. Mrs. Gilmore possessed a gentle and happy spirit that was full of love and kindness. It was always important to her to help others and she loved all deeply. Two of her favorite life sayings were "Live and Learn" and "To treat others like you want to be treated". Ouida enjoyed going to church and to gospel sings, working in her garden and flowers, cooking, bargain shopping, but most of all spending time with family and friends. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed. 


In addition to her parents, her husband, John Houston Gilmore; her daughter, Frankie Joyce Hawthorne; her grandson, Joe Gilmore; her step-daughter, Sara Kirkland; three sisters: Quinn Tew, Dorothy Smith and Hazel Bodie; five brothers: Calvin, Henry, Edward, Alvin and R.B. Adams all preceded her in death. 


Survivors include her children: Franklin Houston Gilmore, Emily Wilkerson, Ray Neil Gilmore (Emogene) and Jo Smith (Johnny Ray); stepson, Johnny Jasper Gilmore; sisters: Mary Paul (Julian) and Minnie Wright; two sisters-in-law,: Frances Adams and Sybil Adams; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.   


The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to all the staff at Wiregrass Nursing Home in Geneva and to Covenant Hospice for their wonderful care and love for Mrs. Ouida. We thank you for prayers and each act of kindness and love shown to our Mom. A special thank you to Dr. David Arnold and staff who cared for our Mom before and after her stay in the Nursing Home and thank you to Dr. John Simmons Jr. who also cared for our Mom in the Nursing Home.
