Mrs. Rachel Brogden Carroll, a resident of Ozark, passed away on September 5, 2020 at home from a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born in Dale County to John Brady and Comer Lou Glover Brogden on July 7, 1930. Mrs. Carroll attended Newton Schools before transferring to Ozark City Schools, graduating from Dale County High School in 1949. She met Joseph G. Carroll when she was 17 years old, he wanted to get married right away, but Mrs. Carroll made him wait one year, until she was 18, and they were married on July 24, 1948; one year and 17 days later.

Rachel was a Grey Lady volunteer with the American Red Cross, completing the prescribed course of training on November 5, 1962. She was a Brownie Troop Leader and taught primary aged children in Sunday School at Ozark Baptist Church for over 30 years. Mrs. Carroll was a substitute teacher at Carroll High School for many years, eventually changing to Home Bound Education. She took painting classes and found her true gift. She and Joe traveled around the Southeast going to craft fairs to sell her wares. She loved working in flowers and decorating her home. She loved Christmas! Every room in the house was decorated; she even changed the art on walls. The family celebrated all holidays and birthdays at her home, these times will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Carroll loved being around other people, she loved being the center of attention and she enjoyed entertaining in her home. She had a monthly outing with two different groups of ladies she never missed. One was the El Palacio dinner group that consisted of fellow church members, family and friends that met at the round table at El Palacio restaurant for dinner. The other group of ladies, who all graduated from Dale County High School in 1949, met at The Ice House for lunch and were dressed to the hilt. They brought their own tablecloth and center pieces to make the occasion more festive.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Mildred Hawkins of Michigan and Lillian Brogden of Ozark; her devoted husband of 65 years, Mr. Joseph G. Carroll. Mrs. Carroll is survived by a sister, Patsy Kelley and her husband, Raymond; and a brother, Milton and his wife, Earleen Brogden. She is also survived by two children, Janet and her husband, Gary Keown (Ozark) and Joe and his wife, Pam Carroll (Headland). Surviving are four grandchildren: Jason and Jennifer Carroll (Indiana), Jennifer and Ryan Roessel (Ozark), Jeff Keown (Abbeville) and Lauren Carroll (Andalusia). She leaves eight great grandchildren, Jared and Jocelyn Carroll, Isabella, Chloe and Cole Keown, Ryleigh Huckabaa, Colton and Asher Watts and Hardy Tillman and Savannah Lillian, and Kathryn Roessel. Mrs. Carroll has lived in Ozark all her life except for one year spent in Ft. Irwin, California while her husband was stationed there between 1961 and 1962. She has many friends and family, including one very special cousin and best friend, Voncile Andrews.
