Obituary: Mrs. Ruby Avery Helms
Mrs. Ruby Avery Helms a resident of Westside Terrace in Dothan passed away Friday, June 14, 2013 at Flowers Hospital. She was 93.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 16 at Union Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Trawick and Rev. Winford Gulledge officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Slocomb directing. Mrs. Helms will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Mrs. Helms was born on October 21, 1919 in Florida to the late Will and Dolly Threat Avery. As an educator, she taught school in Slocomb for many years. In addition, she assisted with a federal program supporting the education of rural Alabama pre-school children known as the “Snoopy” program. Mrs. Helms was an avid writer and published many articles in local papers. She lived for many years at Baptist Village and served as the spokeswoman for the Alabama Baptist Retirement Centers. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother and will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents, her husband, James L. “Tim” Helms, one son, Joe Earl Helms and a great grandson, Taylor Weir preceded her in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Beth Bradshaw (Jim) Jacksonville, FL; three sons: Jimmy Helms (Elaine),Slocomb, Keith Helms (Ann), Slocomb and Fred Helms (Debbie), Dothan; one daughter-in-law, Dorothy Helms, Pensacola, FL; 14 grandchildren: Loren Helms (Sarah), Wade Helms, Terri Singletary (Chad), Melanie Bryan, Allison McAllister (Scott), Amy Elsasser (George), Ekco Baker (Jim), Heather Helms, April Helms, Timothy Helms, Kay Keller and Renee Weir (Roger); 17 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and other extended family and friends.
